The journey in Arts and Crafts consists of exploring the infinite paths in plastic and artistic expression. Throughout the course we have been draftsmen, designers, painters ...... and we have created. In this challenge we are going to be sculptors and we are going to explore multiple possibilities in one type of sculpture.
You will continue this journey in 2nd ESO next year and you will continue to discover and travel on a multitude of trails full of creativity.

SCULPTURES BY ASSEMBLY. MODULAR DESIGNS
The assembly or "assemblage" is defined as the sculptural creation from the union of diverse materials and objects.
The term, of French origin, was first applied by the artist Jean Dubuffet to describe works of conceptual art produced by connecting non-artistic objects and materials. The assembly technique, sister of collage as its origin and concept, creates three-dimensional sculptural pieces connecting non-artistic objects and different materials. The history of assemblage focuses on modern art, specifically on the ebb of abstract movements of experimentation at the beginning of the 20th century. The cubist artist Pablo Picasso made three-dimensional objects (constructions) from various materials; Louise Nevelson experimented with pieces of wood in a renowned series of sculptures, framed within abstract expressionism; John Chamberlain worked with automobile scrap and machine parts to form his welded sculptures; Edward Kienholz composed large-scale paintings of everyday objects; Daniel Spoerri collected discarded objects and then pasted them on a board, producing a type of assemblage known as “snare-pictures”.
EXAMPLE OF A THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE BUILT BY ASSEMBLY AND ITS DEVELOPMENT
In the previous images we see the final result of a sculpture with assembled cardboard modules made by students. This sculpture can be displayed on the floor or table or suspended from the ceiling.
Now we will see how they have built it.
Note that a module is joined and repeated without the need for glue since the assembly technique is used. You have to think of a sculpture to support on the ground while maintaining balance or to suspend from the ceiling. In both cases you will keep in mind that we have to contemplate it from different points of view, being attractive in all cases. We can work with the module in different sizes and in each of them we can repeat the artistic technique you want (textures, gradients, incisions, writing with a message, colored brushstrokes, transparencies, stippling, scratching, etc.) or experiment with different motifs in each one of them. In both cases we are going to use cardboard as the base material.

OUR CHALLENGE IS TO BUILD A SCULPTURE BY ASSEMBLY
GUIDELINES
THE MATERIALS that you are going to use are the following: box or bag to store the different pieces of construction, cardboard, tempera, waxes, pastel, markers, scissors, cutter, colored pencils, pastels, charcoal, newspaper...........
You have to bring the cardboard. The teachers will distribute the different materials used throughout the course according to the idea and the work you want to do.
THE WORKPLACE for each team will initially be at the corresponding class table until you have outlined the work. The material construction of the sculpture will be carried out in one of the Arts classrooms if possible.
STEPS TO FOLLOW. The example provided in this challenge in which the different steps in the construction of a sculpture by assembly are photographed, clearly shows the entire process. The first thing you have to do is think of a module or several and what you want your sculpture to look like. You will specify different sizes of the module and how you are going to treat these pieces with the chosen materials.
DELIVERY. At the end of the challenge you will photograph the sculpture from different points of view. You will upload these photographs to the classroom.
GOOGLE CLASSROOM, individually, indicating each one what he/she has done during the project.
EXPOSITION. At the end we will carry out a sample of all the works in the place that the teachers decide. Likewise, some works may be exhibited permanently at the school.
WE REMIND YOU THAT THE CORRECT USE OF MATERIALS AND FACILITIES IS ESSENTIAL IN OBTAINING A POSITIVE RATING. THE CONTRARY WILL DETERMINE A NEGATIVE RATING REGARDLESS OF THE FINAL RESULT OF THE WORK.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO RATE IT?
HOW DO YOU HAVE TO ORGANIZE YOURSELVES?
You have two sessions to choose the country and the idea that you want to represent and to make some sketches with the idea, the module and decide the materials that you are going to use and how you are going to join these modules.
That first task you have to upload to classroom, you must use a sheet each and you all have to contribute ideas. Decide what you keep from what you contributed as a group and create a final sketch. Upload the homework individually in the classroom. This task is 20% of the grade.
The rest of the sessions you will have to develop the sculpture: draw the modules, cut them, paint them or decorate them as you have decided and assemble the sculpture and make it stand, creating a volume that can be enjoyed from any angle. Take pictures from different angles and upload them individually to the classroom assignment. This task is 70% of the grade.
The remaining 10% of the grade corresponds to the registration form / plan sheet.
